iPad mini for writing word documents?
Can I use the iPad mini for writing word documents etc. Or even if I can use an app and export it for word etc. Is it already loaded app or do I have to buy it?
iOS 6

You can use 'pages', and it can be purchased in the apple app store.
Great! I am going to buy 2 iPad Mini's (lucky me) would this software have to be bought for each machine or can I put it on both machines but one purchace? If you get what I mean?
If you sign into the app store with the same apple id, then yes you can dowload the app to bothe ipads. However, that app, and any others purchased or downloaded with that same account will be forever tied to that account. Keep that in mind if someone else is going to be using one of ipad's. (they won't be able to download any updates without using that same apple id).
Would iWorks be a better choice? The 2 iPads are for my 2 boys which will use them for school homework etc. So PC compatibilty would be preferable. Again would this iWorks have to be bought for each machine if I choose this over pages?
Or is iWorks the package that has 'pages' as part of it's suite?
Pages, keynote, and numbers all make up what is called iwork. However, the ios apps and software versions for a mac are different and need to purchased seperately. They cannot be used on a windows computer but I beleive that microsoft offiice can open them. There may be other progrrams available out there that can be used for all but you would have to search for them in the app store or on the web.
Pages, Keynote and Numbers make up the iWork's suite of apps.
As long as both iPads are using the same Apple ID for purchases from the App Store you could purchase Pages only once. There are drawbacks for using the same Apple ID on multiple devices when those devices are used by different people.
Pages will export documents in Word format so that can be opened by Word on a Mac or PC. Pages is a nice app but it is not as all encompassing as Word on your regular computer. There is some formatting that can be done in .word that will not translate in Pages. Even with that though I find Pages a good App.
Ok. So iWorks, should I buy it, would work on iPad mini but can't be used on another iPad mini etc. Sorry not sure what you mean by ios apps compared to software etc?
The ipad, iphone, and ipod version of the program is different than the software version for a mac. They are two seperate applications that have to be purchased seperately. You can however download them to multiple devices or computers that are apple products. So yes, you can purchase the ipad version and download it to the two ipads. But will need to purchase the mac version to download to a mac.
Ah! Got it! I never saw the mac range of products as different from each other i.e. Mac = Laptops, iMacs etc. iPads are seen as different animals i.e. run with apps rather than software. Ok great that's really helped me to understand thanks. It won't be used on a mac just the iPad Mini's etc
There are also third party apps you can buy that work with microsoft. You can research into Documents to Go (which I use). It syncs with pc's or macs and handles variuos file types.
Great| Thanks for that
