Q: Once I activate an app for example 'Maps' how do I stop it?

Once I activate an app, for example 'Maps', and start it, how do I stop it or turn it off? I can press 'home' and return to home-screen but it shows in green at the top. I'd like to close it. Thanks

I found an answer that address this.

Double-click home, this shows the activated apps at the bottom.

Press and hold desired app until it jiggles, then a - sign appears, press - and it will de-activate app.

You don't need to stop or close it. It is effectively stopped by simply going to another app or the Home screen. The list of apps you are describing is not a list of active apps, it is a list of recently active apps.

tonefox: That is not necessarily true.  When you turn the phone on, it loads all of your apps in the 'active' cue.  It orders them as most recent first.  Try opening an app - go to something else, then relaunch the first app...  It goes to the last place you were (still active while in the second app) unless you close the app and restart.  Don't believe me - try it!

The state of the app is noted when it enters the queue, which enables it to start up again from the same point if it is started by clicking the icon. Until the app is restarted, it is not active.  The only exceptions to this are some applications, usually those which may be playing music or using GPS.
