Mac Mini Core Solo with Bootcamp

I am getting my dad an Intel Mac Mini to replace his PC desktop. He is more familiar with Windows and would like to run XP on the Mac from time to time for things like Office, Firefox, AIM, etc. Is the stock 1.5 GHz Mini sufficient? The Core Duo is a little out of my price range.

Amazon is selling the 1.5 GHz Mini for $599 plus a $25 rebate (no tax, no shipping charges). Anyone here ever bought a Mac from Amazon? How was your experience with them?

Should work fine. Since Boot Camp is a Dual-boot setup, you're only using one OS at a time. I don't think that Windows XP needs 1 GB to run, even considering integrated graphics, but it could make Mac OS X quite faster, especially when running PowerPC-only software (which would run under Rosetta emulation).

While he would need to purchase Office:mac, Firefox and AIM are both available for Mac OS X at no charge, and iChat is also compatible with AIM.

I ordered my Mac Mini from Amazon and had no problems. It was $799 with a $25 rebate, plus no tax. I opted against the free shipping (it takes an extra 3-5 days) and paid for the two-day option. It cost around $17; I figured the no tax and rebate more than paid for that. My Mini made it to my doorstep in two days, as advertised. If you don't mind ordering the stock model, Amazon is a great option. Just do the upgrades later.

I don´t agree that 1 GB is minimum. Over here, a Mac Mini Core Solo is running great and quite fast with the stock 512 MB of RAM (Windows XP via BootCamp). Connected are:

- USB modem
- USB keyboard + mouse
- USB printer
- iPod via USB Hub

We are running various apps from Firefox/Thunderbird to MS-Word, different games etc.

No problems at all so far (only lost audio drivers once and had to reinstall Apple driver package - no big deal however).

Good luck & have fun
Tom
