iMac can't find iPad.

I have an iPad3 which I have used for some little time but when I came to use it today there was no wifi connection. After a lot of checking and testing I have now got a wifi connection but my iMac simply does nor register the existence of the iPad in iTunes. remote on the iPad requests that I add an iTunes library and gives me a passcode but no devices are showing on iTunes so I cannot input the passcode. HELP!

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), printer, scanner, ATVs, external hard drives, USB DAC

As suggested I connected via usb and they now talk to each other. Or rather, not entirely.

Remote tells me to turn on Home Sharing which I have done but it then says Add an iTunes Library. When I click on that it gives me a Passcode but there is nowhere on the iMac to enter the Passcode. The iPad appears in Devices in iTunes but there is nowhere for the Passcode. I have restored the sofware on the iPad but still arrive at the same situation. Once again, HELP!

Do you have the latest iTunes 10.7?

  1. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC.
  2. Connect iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to a Wi-Fi network that is connected to the local network that your Mac or PC is also connected to.
  3. Open the Remote app on your mobile device.
  4. Select Add an iTunes Library in the Remote settings screen.
  5. Remote app will display a 4 digit passcode. In iTunes select the name of your iPhone or iPod touch in the Devices list and enter the passcode.

Remote app will be paired with iTunes and you can begin browsing your library using Remote app and select a piece of content to play.

I am obviously failing to get across my problem. I have done exactly as suggested but when I get the Passcode and click on the iPad in Devices on the iMac there is nowhere to enter the passcode. I get a summary of the iPad details plus tabs for music, movies, photos etc. Furthermore I can't do anything with Remote because it is stuck on the page with the Passcode. Even if I close Remote when I rte-open it it goes straight to the page with the Passcode.

No, it didn't help. I have already done all of that when I originally set up the iPad. I have repeated the process many times now always with the same result. My iMac clearly sees the iPad showing all relevant details. Home Sharing is switched on on both machines, but Remote insists on providing a Passcode which I cannot enter into iTunes because it is already connected to the iPad. I have removed the iPad from devices in iTunes preferences and started from scratch, I have removed Remote from the iPad and re-installed, but I always arrive at the situation where the iMac connects to the iPad and Remote presents me with a Passcode I cannot enter.

In this list,

How far are you in this list? Can you mark this list and tell me what's on iPad and what's on you Mac.

Cursors and selected items on both platforms?

I just set this up because I was curious. The passcode that showed up on my ipad did not have to be enterd on my imac. I just clicked on the itunes library that I wanted to connect with, then I was prompted to enter my apple id and password. The entire process took me about 2min. Not sure what the passcode was for, I did not need to enter on my imac to get this to work.
