Font Book and Extensis Suitcase

Hello;

I have been using Extensis Suitcase for eons to manage my fonts and have been ignoring Font Book since it's introduction.

However, I have heard that I can print out a font sample listings using Font Book, though for the life of me I have not been able to find out how. So, that is the first question.

Secondly, what if any are the compatibility and conflict issues with these two applications.

Your help is much appreciated.

Hi Chris,

Since I don't have Font Book on my system, I'm not sure how to print samples with it either. But the cheap ($10) shareware app FontBook can do that. Has a whole bunch of different layouts to choose from. You can download it and try it out before buying.

what if any are the compatibility and conflict issues with these two applications.

Just that they will occasionally get in each other's way. Say you double click on a font. Both Suitcase and Font Book will activate the font. You then close the font in Suitcase, but are momentarily left scratching your head wondering why the font is still available. That's because Font Book is holding it open. It's best to have only one font manager active at a time. If you always use Suitcase, remove Font Book from the hard drive.

Kurt:

So, if you don't have Mac's Font Book loaded, does that mean you never had it or it was loaded and you un-installed (deleted) it.

I have both Suitcase X1 and Font Book on my work station (10.3.9) and would like to dump Font Book but was never certain if Font Book was integrated with the OS and if deleting it would cause harm.

I deleted Font Book immediately after installing OS X and installed Suitcase. It's safe to delete Font Book.

It's to your advantage to do so, since having more than one font manager on the system at a time is a nuisance. Then you avoid problems from double clicking on a font. Both Suitcase and Font Book will activate the font when you do that. So when you turn it off in Suitcase, you'll be mildly confused as to why it's still available in applications. That's because Font Book still has it open. So you're always having to remember to deactivate a font in both programs in such as instance.
