Okay, the delay is because I was importing 679 clips from one folder. It still is quicker in FCP7 taking only about 20 seconds to do this same import, whereas FCPX took 1 min 55 seconds (most of the time it spent with the pop up "Processing files for import" even though all import buttons were unchecked). But when I just imported 20 files or so it took only a few seconds. I'm fine with all this though. The real issue is the IMPORT Window freezing up.

I'm not sure what it is or if its the trial or not. Seems like someone a few posts back said he never had this issue with 10.0.5 so my guess is he doesn't have the trial. Tom, do you have any recommendations on how to troubleshoot this? Obviously I want to give FCPX another try (I'm back after this recent update since a few things that were missing that REALLY bothered me were added) but if there's an issue with the app, or with the trial, or with my files, or with my computer I'd love to get it fixed.

Again, it does not have anything show in the upper window and it freezes if I try to hit play. Although again, I can scrub through the filmstrip looking clip above the file list. Can you or anyone else help?

It took a minute 55 for the processing media dialog to disappear? That seems strange. There may be something in the metadata the application is reading that's taking time.

I would trying making a new user, and reinstalling from the App Store. When you installed the app did it move the FCS apps into a folder called Final Cut Studio?

Aside from that I can't help. You might try taking the system to an Apple Store.

Thank you Tom for your responses.

I'd say it was on the "validating files for import" for about 20-30 seconds and then the processing media dialog for a full minute. The whole thing took 1:55. But again, it was 679 clips (about 5 hours worth of footage). I don't even see these dialogues when I import say 10 or 20 clips it goes so fast. But like I said, FCP7 never took 1:55. Its annoying but I can live with it. Its the freezing thing that *****.

I'm not sure what you mean by make a new user. As in download the trial under a different name/email? I downloaded this app from the apple.com page under FCPX. The app was installed in the Applications folder with all the other apps. It did not go in a folder called Final Cut Studio. I don't have a folder with that name (even though I do own FCS3).

I have several questions about FCPX just as a new user but I'll save that for another post. But first I wanted to try to solve this import window issue. Taking it into an apple store is an option I guess. Oy. I just work on this computer 6 days a week editing. I guess I could use my old 2007 iMac if they needed to hold this one hostage for a day or two if it needs fixing.

The rest of the app seems to work fine though. Definitely better than my trial a couple months ago when I had lots of freezing up and huge memory issues (where in minutes my memory would drop from say 12 or 13 gigs free to 20MB free and the rest "inactive"). Now it seems to run smooth aside from this issue.

A new user as in a different user on your computer, with a clean set of system and application preferences. You can use your regular Apple ID. It helps in some instances.

But you have FCP7 and the Final Cut Studio apps installed as well don't you? Maybe you don't/ Both FCP7 and FCPX have the same name Final Cut Pro, so they can't be in the Applicatiosn folder simultaneously. Usually when you installed FCPX, it moves the Studio suite of applications into a folder called Final Cut Studio.

Okay. I've never done that new user thing so I'll look up how to do it unless you know of a link that clearly shows me how. I do have FCP7 and Compressor and Motion and all that from FCS3. But Final Cut Pro and FCPX are in the same applications folder. One is called Final Cut Pro and one is called Final Cut Pro Trial. So there is no folder called Final Cut Studio. I searched.

Sorry. I forgot the trial has a different name. Wonder if the legacy version is causing a problem. Apple recommends it be on a separate drive, but that's a bit much. You could try moving the FCS apps into a Final Cut Studio folder. Also did you run the download additional content function?

I'll try to put them in a different folder. Maybe I could download the trial to a separate drive since its not nearly as big as FCS. What do you think about that? I'll try.

As for the download additional content function, I don't know what that is or what you are referring to.

The app has to be in the Applications folder.

In the FCP menu there should an option to download additional content. This loads sound and codecs. You probably have them already.

The app is in the the applications folder. I moved all FCS apps into a separate folder. Nothing changed. Also I tried to download additional content and it said it was all up to date. Nothing to download I guess.

So now I guess I'm down to these options:

1) Re-install. (can I do that on a trial?)

2) Then, if that doesn't work try that new user thing (still don't know how)

3) Bring to apple store 😟

Let me know if this sounds right. Thanks Tom.

Hi Tom,

Well, after trying to figure this out for ours my screen still locks up and freezes on the import window when I try to hit play. Again, no video shows in the upper window. If I avoid that the app works fine. But that obviously means there's some issue and that's why I'm doing a trial to see how well this app works. 2 months ago I tried FCPX and had issues so I went to Premiere CS6 instead. While I like it, the recent FCPX update brought in many features that I missed on my first try. But then this issue. Ugh! So close.

BTW, you should know that I was able to create a new user in system pref and restart and login with that user and redownloaded and installed FCPX trial and although I was hopeful, it still froze up. Strangely enough this time I was able to scrub through that little filmstrip looking preview on the Import window WITH sound (before it had no sound). But still, no video in the upper window and it freezes upon hitting play. Bummer.

Apple store here I come...ugh. What a pain.

Were you on the trial or the full version? Were you having the same issues as shown in the screenshots from earlier in this thread?

Unfortunately I've reinstalled about 5 times and switched users, trashed pref, and still the same issue. If I ignore the upper import window and don't hit play the app seems to perform well, but its hard to move on or make a final decision about the app when I know there's an major issue like this.
