Clips from events being moved to a project get distorted and "iMovie quits unexpectedly." Any ideas how to resolve this?

"Safely" restarting the iMac does not solve the problem. No new plug-ins have recently been installed.

How do I reinstall iMovie'11 - guidelines say go to the Appstore, but there the information reads - correctly (sic!) - that iMovie IS installed.
