Mine had the same issue after I let the battery run down and did not charge it for over a month. Did a reset as described in below link and it fixed it.

Hello, I´m having a similar problem. My trackpad wasn´t working properly and somewhere I read that taking out the battery could help, it didn´t and now my battery wont charge! The worst of all is that I live in Concepción Chile, 500 kms from apple support, so sending my computer leaves me with no computer for 2 weeks. The point is I hope you can help me to solve it by my own. I've tried PRAM and SMC reseting unsuccessfully. And here I have a problem with the instructions, as they say: "turn off, then press power together with option... then release them altogether  and THEN turn on the computer. But, when the power is off and you press the power button, at releasing it turns on automatically... I mean no chance to turn it on afterwards... I hope I´m explaining my self right well, any help I´ll be so grateful.

It´s a MacBook 6,1 , this is the info I get from the system profiler.

I did! now the battery icon appears with a black x, but sometimes it says "not charging" and then the system profiler shows "battery installed: yes"

although it hasn't change again, the x is stuck to my battery

Your battery is well above the 300 cycles that an AMSB016 is considered good. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1519

You can get a new third party battery fairly cheap on eBay. Every MacBook from 2006 through Mid 2009 except the Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 and 2010 White Unibodies use the same A1185 battery.
