I am having this problem with my 2011 unibody MacBook Pro. I plug the charger in and the light doesn't turn on. My computer recognizes it as plugged in but I get "battery not charging message". I'm at 42%. I've done both resets, no luck. Any help would be much appreciated.

I noticed my Mac Book was doing the same. It would work when plugged into AC but Battery would not charge. I turned the charger that connects to the laptop around so the charge light is is in the position further away from the space bar, and the battery started charging.

There are a few things that may contribute the battery's status, to include its failure due to age

and charge cycle totals; how the computer is used, the load, how the power settings may be

adjusted to help conserve the battery, and when or if the battery has been run dead. These all

contribute to how long a battery may last. Also, these are consumables & are destined to fail.

Later MacBook /Pro /Air, etc have better technologies in the battery & charger than previous

iBook G3/G4, PowerBook G3/G4, but still the new battery can be forced into a short life by

how it is handled. Ambient temperatures, storage, and age even if not used, do affect its life.

And the power adapter, its connection to the computer & mains, along with other factors may

contribute a need to replace this item as well. To have known-good spare on hand is advised.

To correctly identify your computer and not just the battery, should make it less difficult to find

a suitable replacement battery; at some point with an aging portable, you may have to settle

on a clone or copy of the original battery and perhaps a marginal one at that. Some reputable

sources exist for replacements of certain models, if not available via Apple online or through

an authorized Apple reseller or service provider. OWC and powerbookmedic are among a few

places to look. And the source may vary depending on if the battery is one you can replace or

if that model is glued into the case or requires extensive effort to remove/replace the battery.

A fair idea is to get a look at how the battery in your model may be accessed, should that need

arise to attempt to change out the battery, before it fails. Note there are several iFixit.com guides.

In any event, after reading through this lengthy thread from several years ago, they do have a

few things in common. Mostly a need to try a few things (most did that) such as SMC reset, or

get a new battery, and/or a new power supply; clean the connectors on both halves of Magsafe,

and see about getting an appointment with a Genius at official Apple Store for diagnostic testing.

The first item in this topic here, started in 2012: why is my macbook not charging?

If no Apple Store is available, with Genius, check with the AASP or authorized service providers

such as those who may have product experts or other staff Apple trained on the portable you have.

    Good luck & happy computing!

Can someone help me please. Just put a brand new battery and it's not charging. I've let it die about 5-6 times and then it'll charge back up. It just says "Battery Is Not Charging" in the right hand corner. I've tried the smc reset but not sure if done correctly cause there is no change. Here is my info.

I had the same problem, together with my fan being loud and an "X" on the battery display sign. I read ringalex and LewisGa's comments about praying and remembered I am a Christian and I could actually pray about it. So I did. Then I searched on google for like the 10th time again and found this vid.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Laocw-AO7Fw

Basically, the solution is to hold Shift, Alt (Options key), Ctrl and Power down for about 15 seconds. Worked for me like a charm.

    Thanks you Jesus!!!

I had gone through a new macbook battery and two chargers until I finally figured it out.  I had been using my wife's macbook pro 13 inch charger on my macbook pro 15 inch device and the wattage didn't match.  It can kill both a battery or the charger.  Here are two links to the respective chargers if you need to replace either:

Another source for official Apple power adapters for portable computers is OWC.

Certain models cannot use other models power adapter, but some do interchange

    and a lower watt output model may only be good to charge a high-demand unit;

but adapters for the /Air MacBook are generally under-powered, not recommended

for use with the /Pro MacBook or standard older 2006 to 2010 MacBook.

Also known as macsales.com, they usually have both bulk-packaged & retail lots

and the retail one generally includes the long AC cord, while the bulk-packaged

model only has the toggle 'duck-head' plug. These can be obtained for less than

retail price and are guaranteed. OWC is a fairly good source for other Mac parts.

Sometimes they are sold out in one area, so to look into another may help...
