Timing problem with a transition duration

Hello, I am making a slideshow in iMovie 09. The second last slide fades to white, and the transition duration is 9 seconds. The very last slide is a title slide with a white background. I would like the fade to white to last the entire 9 seconds of the transition, so that just as the last remnants of the image have disappeared, the title slide appears. But what happens instead is that the fade to white is accomplished during the first 4.5 seconds of the transition. Then there is a white screen for the remainder of the transition, another 4.5 seconds.

How can I make the fade to white take the entire duration of the transition?

Many thanks.

Instead of using Fade to White use a Cross Dissolve. For a 9 second transition you need, as a minimum, an 18 second clip on either side (before inserting the transition). Generally, a transition can be no longer that half the duration of the shortest clip on either side.

So, firstly ensure that the outgoing clip is at least 18 seconds. Insert a white background clip after that outgoing clip (see NOTE below), also of a duration of at least 18 seconds. Now add a Cross Dissolve between these 2 clips and adjust the transition duration to 9 seconds (double-click the transition to open the Inspector). You will note that both the outgoing clip and the white background clip will each now be reduced by 9 seconds.

Finally, drag the Title onto (and as close as possible to the left edge of) the white background clip (immediately after the transition). Adjust the Title duration as required.

After this process, the outgoing clip will gradually fade to white over 9 seconds, then the Title will appear on the white background.

NOTE: The white background can be selected from the Map, Background and Animatic Browser (click on the very last icon at the right of the centre toolbar, next to the Transition Browser). You don't need to insert a Title to access the backgrounds - just add the background from the browser before inserting the Title.
