Has anyone successfully used a VGA over Cat 5 extender with an Early 2008 iMac to connect to a projector??? If so which one?

I have been trying to find a way to connect to a ceiling mounted Epson 825W projector ffrom a Early 2008 iMac running 10.7.5. Only reasonable way to connect seems to be a VGA over Cat 5 extender device. Using Tripp-Lite extender kit now and only get "resolution not supported" message on projector. Other projector models behave the same. Anyone doing this now??
