is firewire obsolete?

I know that a new MacBook Pro is available, and I was wondering about my older devices that I still use on a regular basis. since the new MacBook Pro comes with 2 thunderbolt ports, a usb port, and a charger port, I began to wonder about my devices, and came to ask about firewire... is firewire obsolete? if so, how would I be able to use my existing hard drives (that are firewire 400 only) without any firewire ports? thanks

You will need this: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r

and this: http://store.apple.com/us/product/TW748LL/A/moshi-800-to-400-firewire-adapter

Don't necessarily buy the latter from Apple, its quality is no better than ones you can buy for < $10. I have yet to find a better source for the Thunderbolt adapter though.

... is firewire obsolete?

It certainly hasn't caught on like some might have expected, but with the above adapters, you can still use all your existing FireWire equipment as always.

I'm buying my first Thunderbolt drive in December - and I had to do some saving for it - but I'm going to continue to use my Firewire drives. Firewire won't be obsolete until the prices of TB drives come down to half of what they are today - and as TB hasn't been included with much but Macs (yet) I still see the need for FW/USB 3.0 drives.

Just my 2¢...
