Hello,
I have an imac 27" iMac with one of the affected hard drives. As you know these are not small machines and i'm concerned about transporting it to an Apple store.
As i have AppleCare, will I be able to arrange for an engineer to come out to me to replace the hard drive?

You have to take the computer to an Apple Retail Store. Replacement programs are for all the computers affected, not only the Macs registered with AppleCare
I am not questioning the programs eligibility criteria. I am asking if an Apple engineer will come out to those of us who have AppleCare?
No. You must take the Mac to an Apple Store. AppleCare applies only for problems only with your computer, not with Apple replacement programs

Wrong. If under AppleCare and, in least in the US, if you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine. Additionally, others who don't have the AppleCare PP have had onsite service under the same conditions for the HD replacement. There's no need to haul it around if eligible. For the OP, call and ask for it.
Not in the UK, I asked Applecare this morning and was told it had to go to a store, a bit peeved really as I thought they would come out after all Applecare is not cheap, and my machine was quote 3 to 5 days. We booked two slots at the store together for mine and my dads machine, not they still could do even one in the allotted time.
Thanks for the feedback. That's one reason I included the in the US caveat. Too bad the UK store's aren't honoring that. Must be an EU thing.😉
As baltwo suggested, call Apple. While on the phone with them yesterday, I was told that they had set up a special division to deal with in home repairs for the recall program to assure that everything was running smoothly. So, it is absolutely worth a call.
