Q: Mac Mini 2012 video blinking out

I just got my 2012 Mac Mini yesterday (mid range model) and have already noticed three instances where the video would blink out for about a half second, and then come right back. This happend twice already when I'm connected to a Apple 23 inch LCD monitor via the included HDMI-DVI adapter and once when I'm connected via HDMI to my Samsung LCD TV. Anyone else noticing this happening on their Mac Minis? Thanks.

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

If 10.8.3 addresses these issues.. then is this something we have to buy as an upgrade or will it be available to all of us? Im new to the apple computer and OS with a new mini.

You will not have to buy this update. It's free.

Depending on your MM's settings, the update will download automatically.

You could also go, at any time, to "Software Updates" (Apple icon upper left corner) and see if there are any new updates for you MM.

When it does come out and you install it, please write back and let us know how you're making out.

This just started happening to me today.  I've had my MM for about a month.

I plan on calling the local Mac Store and asking the rep why he sold me a computer he knew to be defective.

Almost four months???  Peoples' screens are shutting off and nothing has been done for almost FOUR MONTHS??

I have been a Windows/Microsoft defender for years.  This is my first venture into Mac.  Our office was issued MacBook Pros and it won me over to switch at home.

    Regretting that right now.

Im happy to report that I have just installed the latest developer build of 10.8.3 and.....

    ALL ISSUES SOLVED

Blinking every 10 seconds  - gone

    Washed out colours - gone

My Mini Works after more than 3 Months!

    BUT

I think apple should at least compensate us for this awful situation! A Credit? An extension on my AppleCare - something!!

Also  - does anyone know if I can upgrade my beta 10.8.3 to the Production Release when its available?

Only way is to join the dev program (99 per year) or wait for the prod release in a few weeks

I hate to say it, but anyone who wants some kind of compensation is probably in for disappointment because you all held on to your (broken) mac minis rather than telling Apple you mean business by getting your money back.

As long as Apple has followers who don't stick up for their consumer rights then they will continue with a shoddy product like this in the full knowledge that people will moan but do nothing about it. They've still got your money so who cares if the masses aren't happy!

Sadly, I can see their point.

    Sam.

I have this same problem. Late 2012 MacMini hooked up HDMI HDMI to brand new Samsung 27" S27B350. The monitor looks terrible, all washed out and blurry fonts. Occasionally blanks out. And after a few hours of use, it starts flashing and has to be shut down for a few minutes before it comes back to being at least tolerable.

I'm crossing my fingers for 10.8.3

I am having a wierd one... My 2012 Mac mini Core i7 16GB RAM is having issues when hooked up to an HP w2207h monitor. The screen constantly flashes!! I can connect the MM to a different monitor (ASUS MS238 or a Dell 1704ftp) and it works. The HP w2207h works when connected to my 2010 Mac mini, my Macbook Air, or any of my other PCs. Hope this helps the engineers somewhat!!

Hi Igndry, I use the same HP and had the same issues. Problem is that by HDMI the MM doesn't support 1680x1050 that your w2207h is requesting. You should manually switch to a smaller resolution which is almost impossible with the flashing screen. You better hook on another display first, put the res to 1600x900 (so not auto detect screen!) and switch the monitors without shutting down your MM. Then it will work, although with a disappointing image....

Untill the update 10.8.3 is released I've connected them by MPD-VGA and this works sufficient. Hope it will for you too.

I hope 1.0.8.3 will fix random blackout

Otherwise, it will break my heart and refund my mac mini 2012 :/

It does have some improvements, but tough to tell if it'll solve all problems.

Can we get a refund after 30 days?  What recourse is there for us if 10.8.3 doesn't work?  I can't use a computer where I have to turn it off and on a couple of times an hour long term!

I guess I'm lucky ... once I turned off Sleep I haven't had any further problems (I'm using a HP w2207 with DVI). I do turn the computer off at night & start it up each morning. I learned this trick from some other poster to this discussion so I'm sure it will help others, helpfully Zunfolge.
