Q: Mac Mini 2012 video blinking out

I suspect that quite a few monitors do NOT claim Mac compatibilty even if they might be induced to work.

I'm using an HP w2207 w/ a Mac Mini as a 2nd monitor fairly successfully but recently noticed that the company (HP) doesn't claim compatibility between this monitor and Macintosh products/operating systems -- only Windows products (& presumably Linux).

What a bummer. I was going to buy that monitor.

I have that exact config - Late 2012 mini connected via displayport to a Dell 27" U2713HM. Occasionally I get screen shake, then sometimes followed by a black screen for a couple of seconds. Sometimes this corrects itself straight away, sometimes it repeats.

How on earth can a monitor not be compatable with a computer? They use the same standards, it makes no sense to say they are incompatible.

So what are Apple doing about this?

I am still getting the occasional momentary black screen on my 2012 2.3 Quad i7 mini, even after applying OS and Firmware updates.  I have it connected to a 20" Apple Cinema Display using a Thunderbolt to DVI adaptor.

Screen blacks out for about a second once every few days, usually when navigating websites with Safari.  No HDMI being used.

So there are issues even when using an Apple screen? That's pretty poor show on Apple's part!

I recently took my late 2012 Mac Mini (Fusion) to another city and tried to connect it to an older 20-inch CinemaDisplay which I'd given to relatives. This was to be my only monitor.

I tried a Thunderbolt > DVI connector (the CinemaDisplay used Apple's ADC->DVI brick converter), which worked for a day and then seemed to stop. I couldn't get anything on the screen at all. I never figured out what the problem was (I thought the monitor had died). And I am still not convinced that there wasn't something more I could have done to get that route to the display working.

But, it wasn't that difficult or expensive to procure an HDMI>DVI converter (I'd not brought the one Apple supplies with the 2012 Mac Mini) and I found that that configuration worked fine.

So bottom line would seem to be that the best connection to an older CinemaDisplay would be through the Mini's HDMI port.

I just bought my mac mini and it's already installed the update but the screen is blinking too!!! is there anything else I could do, besides returning?

Same here, I have dual LG IPS234V and the one connected via thunderbolt->hdmi cable works fine but the one on HDMI never works. I need dual screens, that is the reason I got the mini, otherwise I would continue using my 2011 15" MBP. I can't believe this is not fixed yet or was even shipped this way.

I don't know why but it stopped! it was only on the first day of use that I had the problem! anyway if anything happens I'll post!

So 1.7 update has not helped?

I'm having the same prob as everyone else it seems.  Just got a mac mini (the $599 version) and one of my monitors turns black and blinks constantly.  The only way it will work is if I lower the resolutions of BOTH monitors to something low, like 1280x720.  Also, one of my monitors is rotated 90 degress. If I try to rotate just one monitor, they BOTH rotate.  There is no way to rotate just one.

These monitors work just fine with my PC running Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10.  Here's the best part, I installed OSX on my PC using the MultiBeast patch, and both monitors work fine as well - full resolution, and 90 deg. rotation for one screen.  Mountain Lion is not stable on my PC, though, so I want a 'real' mac.  Unfortunately, my 'real' mac is apparently a busted pile of junk.

This is not an OSX problem, it is a Mac Mini / Intel 4000 problem.

Also, I have EFI 1.7 ( Boot ROM Version:          MM61.0106.B03 )

Try a different cable, a new HDMI cable solved my issue. Both cables were identical cables from monoprice but one would never work right, the other, not a single problem.

so nw update is useless ?

I returned mine in January. I bought a new, two days ago, it is perfect.

HDMI connected directly (without adapter) to an Epson projector (100 "screen) or an Asus monitor.

And in addition I saved by buying on the refurb.
