Q: Mac Mini 2012 video blinking out

I just got my 2012 Mac Mini yesterday (mid range model) and have already noticed three instances where the video would blink out for about a half second, and then come right back. This happend twice already when I'm connected to a Apple 23 inch LCD monitor via the included HDMI-DVI adapter and once when I'm connected via HDMI to my Samsung LCD TV. Anyone else noticing this happening on their Mac Minis? Thanks.

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

    Thank you Philip.

A while ago I handled the relationship of my department, part of a UK Top-Ten FTSE company, with our IT supplier. Often they were unaware of the extent of a problem because my colleagues would mutter to each other, work-around issues or tell me.

I often picked up the phone to a call that started "I thought that I would tell you rather than Helpdesk." You can guess what my reply was!

Clearly you have gone the extra mile by parting with your machine, I was luckier although, whilst using a work-around of a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter (which a nice man at Apple gave me) I still have the underlying problem.....

On the phone to Apple now, they are asking me to reinstall the OS, and if the problem doesn't go away to take it to my local Apple store where they will run a diagnostics to see if there is a hardware problem and a possible fix.

    Just keeping y'all updated.

Sadly I have agreed to have a refund on my Mac Mini

I was kindly put thorugh to some American lady (I am British) and she was amazingly kind and caring about the matter, brilliant custeroms service. 10/10, wasn't even rushed. Couldn't ask for any better!

I shall keep up to date on this forum and see if a repair happens within the near future, cause if there is a repair I'll go and buy another one, because other than the flickering the machine is great!

Thanks y'all that have been here to help me make this difficult decision, I shall stay in touch to let people know how things go if I feel it will help someone out there.

I have just been telephoned by Apple Care, apparently the assistant that was looking after my case no longer works for them, and although they have this persons details to login to his e-mail the e-mail system has been changed as well and is making life difficult!

The down side my replacement MM has not even been ordered, because they have no idea if mine has arrived! But as I had the tracking number I could inform them at what time and by who the package was received.

My MM, presumably when they find it, will then head out across the Atlantic heading for One Infinite Loop, California I have been told.

Meanwhile I await conformation my replacement BTO MM has been ordered and then dispatched.

    Oh, bad luck Philip.

As and when your replacement arrives we will all look forward to hearing that they have fixed it.

My MM is my main machine and I would be very reluctant to part with it. Hopefully if an exchange is required then I can do it through my local Apple Store.

By the way, advice for other readers, before you part with your MM make sure you have done a full Time Machine backup. Before the store swapped my machine I did that and the restore was easy and left my new machine, bar one or two tiny tweaks, exactly as it was before including Parralells, Windows 7 and Access 2007 for Windows!

My take, but this is unofficial, is that it is hardware relating to the HDMI port.

Whatever is the real issue, it looks community made more attempts to address it than apple itself. I have returned my mini for a refund. Will buy new one once when/if it gets fixed.

If everyone does so,  there is a bigger chance apple will take it seriously.

None that I know of. The Manager who has taken my case in Apple Care has contacted their Engineering department and awaits their response.

If it is hardware they may be able to fix them with a firmware download, so too soon to worry.....

If you have a problem with your Mini, please log a call and get a number. Lots of calls is the best way to get their attention.

    Good luck.

In my case that is a similar problem (It fails to properly show the light color density, seem "burned out"), it's the same thing with Thunderbolt to HDMI cable.

Works fine with Thunderbolt to DVI or HDMI to DVI.

    Now that's interesting!

I started with HDMI to DVI and whilst I didn't have any problem with colour I had the screen going blank or to 'snow'. That was what caused me to exchange my Mini.
