Q: Mac Mini 2012 video blinking out

I just got my 2012 Mac Mini yesterday (mid range model) and have already noticed three instances where the video would blink out for about a half second, and then come right back. This happend twice already when I'm connected to a Apple 23 inch LCD monitor via the included HDMI-DVI adapter and once when I'm connected via HDMI to my Samsung LCD TV. Anyone else noticing this happening on their Mac Minis? Thanks.

Does anyone know if this problem is present in mac minis with an Intel HD3000 graphics system?

Yes, ALL Intel graphics chips had this problem, but HD3000 not as many. If you have HD3000 then make sure you have the latest firmware installed.

I'm reading the Intel forum every day looking for light at the end of the tunnel. I don't know who to be annoyed with more regarding this - Intel or Apple.

I'm also assuming that the numerous returned MMs will someday be updated, repacked, reshrink wrapped and..........sold as new as opposed to refurbished.

I hope I'm wrong on that.

So I was having this problem for the first week or so after getting my mini, but haven't seen a flicker in in the past two weeks or so.

    To Bibbert and MyMac8MyPC,

I guess there are some of those which don't have the issue. After returning the latest Mac Mini and getting tired of waiting, I recently bought the mid 2011 Mini i5 from someone and it has the Intel HD Graphics 3000. I've tried HDMI to HDMI and Mini DisplayPort to HDMI, both on a Samsung monitor. Not a single flicker or any washed out colours.

Just thought I'd let you know, since you asked.

Apple, for choosing Intel Integrated Graphics, the lowest end possible.

    As do we all.

Please, if you haven't already, call AppleCare and let them know you have this problem. The more reports, the better. As to whether you return the unit or wait for a fix, that's up to you. The more people who get a refund, the more economic incentive there is for Apple to fix this sooner rather than later.

    Hi

Like many others I was experiencing flickering (so now and then, about 2 seconds) and/or coloured snow on my Mac Mini 2012 i7, connected to HDMI. Luckily my monitor (HP LP2475w) has a display port. I bought a mini-DP to DP cable (€ 14.00) and connected my monitor to the DP, which solved the problem.

When connecting a second monitor (to the HDMI port) this does not effect the good working of the HP LP2475w connected to the DP. However the flickering and snow is much worse on the second monitor, than it was when only a single monitor was connected to HDMI. After some time the snowing even remains until I unplug and plugin the monitor again. Morover, the Mac Mini gets very warm then. Therefore I now work with one monitor again, on the DP.

I thought this info could be useful. Maybe a question of overload?

    Best regards,

    John

Good idea! I'll call them. I won't return it though. I use it 80% of the time on my HDTV and I loose the signal once a day for 2 seconds. I can live with that if a fix is coming.

I just spoke with Apple and they are aware of the flickering issue using the HDMI port.  A fix will be released with 60 days.  They suggested to hold off purchasing the Mini if possible until after the fix.

Intel indicated fix has been released to all PC manufacturers so I'm hoping that it is a driver change and that is what apple needs to release after they confirm it does not mess up anything else..

Hello from Russia. I have the same problem. it affects my work and I do not want to treat their customers like Apple and Intel. I intend to return this device. 4 years preparing for the transition from Windows to Apple. It is a pity that the decision for so long.
