Max fan speed after official iMac hard drive recall and replacement

Bring it back to Apple and tell them to do it right.

Take it back to Apple for service. Third party fan controls are, IMHO, a bad idea.

There are, but I have not seen a rash of complaints such as yours. They probably forgot to attach the sensor cable, and compounded their error by not testing your iMac before returning it to you.

I had my iMac's drive replaced at an Apple Reseller just a few days ago. The fans are working correctly. While I know it is inconvenient for you, I would take it back for it a resolution. Quite obviously they did something incorrectly.

My Seagate HD was replaced via the recall program with a Hitachi Ultrastar A7K2000, if I'm reading the System Profiler information correctly. In the week or so since the replacement, the fan speeds have been the same as they were previously under my normal usage conditions (998 rpm optical drive, 1099 rpm HD, 940 rpm CPU, per iStat Pro).

Mike, just received mine back today after a drive replacement and the fans run at full speed for me as well. Also noticed a small dark spot right in the middle of the screen. Looks to be under the glass. I will be taking mine back in yet again to have them correct the issues. I would rather they just replace the unit or have someone who knows what they are doing fix it correctly, the first time..

I have replaced maybe a dozen 1tb drives under the recall program.

Of those, two drives have made the fans run at full speed.

I replaced the CPU fan on one, but it made no difference.

I am still waiting to hear what Apple would like me to do.

Apple has suggested/recommended that we treat the hard drives as DOA. Obviously, that's a little counterintuitive since the drives read and write perfectly well, but I guess the internal temp sensors are a little wonky and the fan action is the result. I will be replacing one drive today and I will report if it doesn't fix the problem.

Hi Mike had the same problem apple care guy tried resetting over the phone, still same problem I never heard the fan before Apple changed the drive. Organising to take it back to where the repair was done. will let you know the outcome.

They screwed up. Most likely, failed to hook up one or more temp sensors.

Hi; I think it's been confirmed that when the fans run full speed after hard drive replacement the hard drive is DOA and needs to be replaced.

aHi guys thanks for all the advice and comments about the fan running all the time after replacement of hard drive. Took it back to the shop as most of you suggested they had forgot to connect a sensor. It took them 10 minutes to fix it all ok now, looking forward to many more years of happy Imac use. thanks again for your inputs. Applekoala
