Please do startup troubleshooting and select refresh pc. That removes your bootcamp installation and other installations apart from windows. Then reinstall Bootcamp from your source and it gets the trackpad working. My problem has been when I give Windows update, there is an optional update for AMD chipset nad once i install it, it says PC is restarting because of an error "Bad Pool header" and keeps restarting. Without that update though, my MBP 17 inch screen is not working in full brightness..

have found a temp solution now, before apple releases its update. this will make ur trackpad work but without any gestures and u'll have to press to select the left or right click.

here's the solution.

1. go to device manager

2 locate ur trackpad and right click and choose to update the driver.

3. select browse my computer for driver software.

4 select "let me pick from the list of device drivers on my compuet".

5 just keep pressing the "NEXT" button after that.

thats its u'll have a working trackpad for now.

I have various apple machines. A 17 inch 2010 macbook pro and a 15 inch 2011 macbook pro. I usually use the 2010 machine to experiment. I like windows and have installed win 8 enterprise (see volume licensing) as my main desktop o/s at home. The first couple of times I installed win 8 on the 17 inch mbp, after updating the drivers with the bootcamp 4 drivers, the machine kept crashing and rebooting.

I googled bootcamp version and discovered that there is a bootcamp 5. I deleted my windows partition, recreated it, downloaded bootcamp 5, and reinstalled windows 8 pro. This time when I ran the bootcamp 5 drivers, the machine did not crash.

It seems there is a lack of awareness of the existence of bootcamp 5.

If you are going to install windows 8, DO NOT use your old bootcamp drivers. Download a new bootcamp 5 file from apple (available during the creation of the bootcamp partition) and you are set. No more problems. Also be aware that even the new bootcamp 5 drivers can be updated.

@andrewsam

I ran into the same problem as well. I updated Windows 8 with the optional update for AMD Video driver and after restart the system starts crashing with BAD_POOL_HEADER error.

Only way out is to RESET your Windows 8 installation from Safe Mode which you enter while rebooting and hitting F8 .. (keep your Windows 8 DVD handy for this). Windows 8 will remain activated after the reset operation (whew!)

You can solve the screen brightness issue with instructions given here -

ps: without the start button Windows 8 is following Mac OS design..... loving it !

This thread is very confusing and misleading, because Boot Camp has two parts, or "sides" if you will, and it reports different version numbers depending on if you're talking about when running OSX the "Boot Camp Assistant", or, what it installs into Windows 7 known simply as "Boot Camp".

As follows:

OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.2 = Boot Camp Assistant = .app version 5.0.0 (build 444). This is the OSX-side utility that paritions the OSX disk, lets you download the Windows drivers set, etc.

Windows 7 = Boot Camp Task Bar Tray Icon = .exe version 4.0 as reported in Help->About, or, version 4.0.2.0 as reported in File->Properties. This is the Windows-side utility that lets you easily reboot back into OSX, set the track pad settings such as enable right-click, etc.

I just got off the phone with AppleCare support, who confirmed that, as of today 11/1/12, the above-mentioned versions of Boot Camp are NOT 100% compatible with Windows 8, and furthermore that there is currently NO "officially" supported Boot Camp for Windows 8, period.

However, as found within these Apple message forums, there ARE some work-arounds to get it "mostly" working, by using wacky methods such as downgrading your Windows login permissions to User-level instead of Admin-level to get them to PARTIALLY run, etc.

Here is one such thread which has most of the "tricks" to get it "mostly" working in Windows 8 compiled into a single discussion:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4034572

I truly hope that Apple very quickly releases a new Boot Camp which is 100% compatible with Windows 8, to solve all of those issues for real... without hacks or other work-arounds as is currently required now.

Best of luck!

I had this exact same problem. Nothing anybody told me was working until I found this (it will help to plug in an external mouse b/c it will be very hard to do all by keys -- an external mouse will work by the way)

Navigate to device manager

You will see two devices with yellow symbols next to them under Human Interface Devices

right click one of them and click properties

Go to Driver section and click update driver

click browse my computer for driver software

Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer

Choose USB input device

It will install

Do this for the other device too

Restart

Go back to update driver (for two devices) and choose search automatically for updated driver software

It will install

Do for other device

Restart

Now it will work

I really hope this helps
