Clear sorting information

Hello,

While trying to organize my music, I removed sorting information from tracks because I think I had misunderstood the goal of those sorting fields. Here is an example:

User uploaded file

as you can see, the "Sorting Field" is greyed out.

If I attempt to clear that sorting information

As you can see I tried to clear that information by writting a "blank" character. In some other cases I had mistakenly set up that sorting information to " " (blank space).

How on earth do I set that sorting information to BLANK?

Thanks

What you are seeing is the correct behaviour. There is nothing to fix. The sort fields are not supposed to go completely blank if their partner starts with A, An, The, or local equivalents. I'm guessing from your name you might be Spanish, in which case the list of "ignored" words at the start of a text field is a, an, el, la, las, los, the, un, una, unas, unos.

Lets me add a couple of new images. The first one taken from the "Artist" view on iTunes:

User uploaded file

You can see that I have several albums by Wir Sind Helden (cool Germand band by the way). I also have one album by 30 Seconds to Mars. That is also fine... now comes the trouble: 61 albums by differnt Artists are grouped under " ".

Let me now drill down into that very category.User uploaded file

those 2 albums, 1 by John Norum (a guitar genius) and another one by Jorge Salan belong into that category. And that is sooooo wrong.... Why are those 2 albums -and 59 others- grouped under that weird group? ain't there enough information under the "Info" tab? yes, there is!!

I insist, while I was cleaning things up I tampered with the sorting fields and now I think I'm suffering the consequences. Is there any external editor that I can use? Just take a second Jorge Salan. Check the sequence of images I provided earlier on. Why can't I get rid of the "Sort Album" information? it is not needed and if I attempt to write "BLANK" by simply ticking the check box (check the sequence of images again)?

One important thing. I keep my songs on a NAS, should that my make things work differently...

thanks a million

Those grey values are meant to be there, and have the correct data in them! See in my example how both the band name and one of the album titles gains greyed sort values. If it weren't for them the two albums would be listed in the second column in reverse order and the band would be listed with others that begin "The " instead of with the bands/artists that begin with C.

The grey values aren't real values that take up any storage, either in the library or the tag, They just let you see what auto-sort value iTunes will work with. You may well not have noticed them before you enabled the sort columns while exploring how they worked. Just turn the sort columns off. Problem solved.

The NAS is not relevant to this (non-)issue. iTunes is working the way it is meant to. 🙂

{Slaps forehead}

Do you mean you have the wrong but active sorting data for the artists and they are all sorting on space??? Select the group of 61 artists. Get Info. Type X in the Sort Artist and Sort Album Artist boxes. Click OK. Get info. Delete the X from the two sort fields. Click OK. Close iTunes and then reopen. Better now?

Why do any of your Artists have the value " " as their album name? Have you actually overwritten the artists/album artists of all of these albums or is there just one called " " that the others have all merged into via a common sorting field?

Album Artist trumps Artist in terms of grouping tracks. You may have " " (non-empty value) in Album Artist that can be deleted. Again in some cases you need to close and reopen iTunes to see the benefit of the edit.

ok, I think I get now what you mean. That information will automatically introduced by iTunes when the artist or the album has a definite article like "the", or any of the spanish equivalents.

Understood 🙂

yessssss, they are sorting on space and that is driving me insane.

So I did (here are some snapshots of the process); note that all the albums are selected.

and this is the result:

If I click on this group:

and now I remove that value:

if I go back to the Artist view I get the same unsatisfying result.

There must be something else that I'm overlooking!!! 😟

Select all the tracks you want to edit. Get Info. Empty boxes represent either that different tracks have different values for that field, or that they are all blank, or that they contain the same combination of non-printing characters. Place your cursor in the field box and press backspace/delete. This ensures you have deleted any invisible characters that may be present. Note the checkmark against the box should now be enabled. When you press OK all the selected fields should be reset.

iTunes includes an "autosort" feature which ignores leading articles (a/an/the) so that, for example, "The Beatles" get sorted under B instead of T. The implied value of such autosorting is displayed as a light grey value in the column browser. If you want "The Beatles" listed under T you need to place "The Beatles" into the sort field to override the automatic process.

I obviously didn't make myself clear. I was trying to confirm and explain the way iTunes behaves. It is your expectation that needs to change. If the Artist is "The Beatles" then a blank value in Sort Artist is interpreted as "Beatles" and listed that way in a light grey in the browser. If you attempt to put an single space in the box to "clear" the field you will confuse the sort order as the item will be sorted on the value space. Turn off the sort columns if they irritate you. Or use them to control order of things you do want arranged differently but live with the greyed out values. E.g. Put "Bowie, David" in to sort "David Bowie" under B. If it is just the grey that annoys you could explicity put in the value of "Beatles" which would have the same sorting effect but display in black.

BTW The article I linked to warns against trying to merge different things with the same sort value...

In your example, "The Utopian Sea of clouds" defaults to a Sort Album of "Utopian Sea of clouds" (no "The").

As tt2 noted, it's light gray meaning iTunes defaults it this way. You cannot delete this. If you want it sorted as The Utopian Sea of clouds, that is what you need to put in Sort Album.

Songs, artists and albums the The & A at the beginning, default to a Sort name without A or The.

I guess it is me who is actually not being able to put into words what is happening. It is always challenging to provide a certain level of detail when you are not a native speaker 🙂

I was aware of the behaviour discussed here previously. My problem is that while attemptint to organize my music, I came across several albums (61 to be more precise) which contained data in the "Sort Album" field. I then looked up what tha field was meant for, and I understood that I was most probably missusing the potential of that sorting capability.

My problem is that I can't seem to get rid of the information contained inside that field now. It doesn't matter what I do, either I can put new stuff in there (which overrides what is contained there), or if I remove the existing data and I attempt to write NOTHING, the values revert to the original data. To keep things short: I can't set that field to BLANK. Simply that, I don't want to have sorting information for those 61 albums because the Artist and Album fields should be enough for the matter.

Hopefully this time I managed to explain myself properly.

I thank you in advance for your time and comments.

Perhaps this will clear things up...

Just turn off the sort fields and ignore them. If things are sorted the way that you want then you don't need to review the contents.

Thank you soooo much turingtest2, you've really helped me figuring out the problem!! 🙂

I had Album Artist set to BLANK_SPACE and, for some reason, I was looking for that da*n character in the wrong field. I've cleared Album Artist and all my albums are nicely organized in iTunes.

Now I have another problem. Some albums (I would swear that they belong to the same group of 61 albums) appear on my iPhone grouped under "123". If I go to iTunes, their information appears to be just fine.

Any idea as to what is happening now?

Thanks in advance 🙂
