If i want to use turn by turn navigation on iOS 6 on an ipad 2 or ipad mini (wifi edition), can I do that by tethering my iPhone to the iPad to share data + GPS? Has anyone ever done this and can verify that it works? What if I use, say, a Galaxy S 4G instead of an iPhone? Will navigation still work?

I'm afraid, you will not be able to use IOS 6 turn by turn navigation in your ipad2, because it is restricted to hardwares such ipad2, iphone4 and previous ones.
It's not about iOS 6, it's about the iPad Wi-Fi. That device does not have the GPS chip. But all is not lost. You can simply ADD that feature with something like a Dual Electronics XGPS150A universal Bluetooth GPS receiver. I use mine with NAVIGON USA (http://www.navigon.com/site/us/en/mobile_navigator/iphone) and it works great! I tried tethering and it did not work as well.

I'm asking if anyone has tested this setup using ios6, to see if turn by turn navigation is available on an ipad 2 wifi.
I'll be getting the iPad mini fairly soon. I'll try tethering on that for you. I think the last time it didn't work had more to do with the cellphone carrier than the iPad. I should work.
Okay thank you. My biggest fear is the firmware for the wifi editions of the ipad mini and ipad 2 wont even have turn by turn enabled, so no matter what you buy or do, it wont work. ios5 wouldve been different since the mpas app was all the same.
I don't think its the firmware, I think it looks for the GPS chip and if it doesn't see one then it turns that feature off. Tethering or adding a Bluetooth GPS receiver should allow for the feature to work, but we'll see. 🙂
Anyone tried this ( tethering with iphone and wifi only) by using google maps turn by turn navigation, or navigon or what else. DO get the ipad GPS information?
