Checkerboard displayed when playing back videos on Macbook Pro running OS 10.8.2 via apple TV, Itunes 10 and 4 GB of memory.
Audio plays, but video displays as gray and white checkerboard, when entering full screen the video can be seen for a brief moment then reverts back to checkerboard.

I assume you are Airplay mirroring.
Apple seem to prohibit low level access to video when the application may be showing copy protected material.
Therefore getting a screengrab or capturing video frames to send by Airplay does not work from DVD player.
Try using VLC player instead - I believe that may work.
