play back on itunes library stick or jump

When I play back tracks on my laptop Windows xp, the tracks stick and or jump. It's only recently started doing this, it's been fine for years but for some reason every track has the same sympton. I was told that facebook can sometimes affect it due to a CPU over load. Any got any ideas what causes this and how to fix it.
