The screen may be broken, or it may be frozen. Try holding down the home button and the power button. You should see an Apple logo appear after around 30-45 seconds.

See article for reference: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

After this period of time is over, if you still don't see the Apple logo, your iPad's screen may be damaged. Check for cracks, or if there are none, it may be damaged from the inside. If this is the case, I recommend you contact Apple support which you can do here. https://aoschat.apple.com/Chat/getCustomerDetails.dohttps://aoschat.apple.com/Chat/getCustomerDetails.dohttps://aoschat.apple.com/Chat/getCustomerDetails.do

This is the most efficient way to fix my old iPad 2 ever. It's amazing! The iPad has been dropped and disabled for 3 or 4 times in overall and fixed it up following other methods from the internet as smacked the back of it vertically. However, the outcomes were not very well. Before this time, there were still some dark spots by the left side of the screen; but now, they're all gone -- looks just like a new one! Even if the smacks made my palms painful, it's very very worthy of having it back again! Most thanks to you, Alan!

How long after dropping the iPad do you have to try this trick? I'm concerned that it's been too many hours since I dropped it last night and haven't been home to try it. Also, this happened to me but I got a red screen. I slapped the back as most suggestions said to, and that was successful. However, do you only get 1 chance at reviving the device?

I wanted to add my incredulity to the discussion -- after my iPad was dropped by a 6-year-old, the screen would come on but only as a dark blue-grey. The reboot didn't work so after an online search I smacked it as suggested, and couldn't believe it came on. But the screen was yellow and flickering, so I tried smacking it a few more times, trying to turn it on each time between hits. Smacking on the sides beneath the apple seemed to work. I now have it back to normal. Thanks!!

I am an IT person, know computers well so I don't know why this would surprise me but this week my iPad fell off of my desk and the screen did just as in the original post. I couldn't even do my back up because I have a password on my iPad so I couldn't type that in. I had already made an appointment with the Genius Bar (2 hours one way away from me!!!) and do not have Apple care so was very upset and I read this post by alanfromnewtownards. I would have never in a million years dreamt this would work but I had absolutely nothing to lose so I did it. The first time, nothing but the I started patting all around the back while upside down then hit the menu button and OMG I almost peed my pants from laughing so hard that this is what it took to fix my sweet iPad. I love my Mac toys almost as much as my children and that's saying A LOT!!!! So, alanfromnewtownards, I cannot thank you enough! You are amazing and anyone who questions this unorthodoxed approach to iPad repair can either keep their broken iPad or pay large sums of money to get theirs fixed.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!
