Numbers will also open MS Excel templates (you may need to change the file extension to .xls or .xlsx for Numbers to recognize the file as one it can open, though.
Success also depends on what Excel features have been used in the template. Any not supported in Numbers won't survive the translation, of course.

As I suggested earlier, try searching the Mac App Store. Another option is MacUpdate.com. Search for Numbers or Pages & you'll get quite a few results.
