Q: Question regarding file locations and folders.

Hi,

Be gentle im new to all this mac stuff and im still finding my way around the system (OSX)

Basically i have been a Windows user for years and have moved all my folders (pictures and music) to a QNAP server then to my MBP with the intention of organising the files and folders before moving back to the central location (server) so i can access via media players and TV etc.

So ive downloaded aperture thinking i would be able to organise the folders but im getting the impression its not at all how the application works and it basically presents you with a false reality of an organised folder whilst retaining the source folder in its disorganised disjointed format. Am I correct?

If this is not the case when i import the pics in can I then delete the orginal folder , then organise the pictures and manually backup the new folders back to my server?

I hope this makes sense!\\Cheers

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities, Daz.

So ive downloaded aperture thinking i would be able to organise the folders but im getting the impression its not at all how the application works

You are perfectly correct - that is not how the application works. If you want to use Aperture, you should treat it as a database, that organizes your images for you in terms of library items (projects, albums, books, web journals), and not as a tool to organize your folders on the disk. You are supposed to use Aperture's graphical user interface to access your images, or the Media Browser, if you want to share your images with other applications. The actual files and folders on your hard drive should not matter to you.

If this is not the case when i import the pics in can I then delete the orginal folder , then organise the pictures and manually backup the new folders back to my server?

I am not sure what you want to achieve. If you can delete the original folders, will depend on how you imported your images into Aperture. When you imported, did you select to store the files inside the aperture library, or did you select to leave them in the original loacation? If you left the images in their original location (referencing the original images) then you better not delete the images you imported - for those may be your only copies of the images.

and im unsure how i imported the files.

If you select any image in Aperture's Browser and then select "Show in Finder" from the "File" menu in the main menu bar, Aperture will reveal the original image file in the Finder. If this option is greyed out, the original image is managed by Aperture and has been successfully imported. Then you can move the image files you imported. But if Aperture reveals the fiels outside the library, then the file has not been imported and needs to stay put.

Can you reccomend a good program for me to visually organise these orginal files and folders?

I don't know what exactly you need to organize your files. I simply use the Finder to arrange files. I hope, somebody else will chime in.

Basically i want to organise so i can store centrally on my server so my various network devices can use them. The tools to move files around on the server are terrible and i have lots of files to sort through. Some of my devices are not to intelligent when i access files on the server and need to be initailly logically ordered for viewing otherwise its murder to find anything

Aperture is not designed to work from centrally located server storage. If that is what you need, you should look at a differenet application.

Aperture needs to be on a locally mounted, Mac OS X extended formatted volume, see

Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
