Question

Weird font mapping; Mac text file okay, display in Safari bad

I have a file with some non-english characters in it, which displays and edits Just Fine on my Mac, but does NOT display in Safari on the same Mac.

I have tried different Text Encodings in Safari, but none of these will make Safari display the text that appears just fine in AppleWorks, TextWrangler, TextEdit, etc etc

How do I get the fonts to map correctly ?

Sorry, using Mac Roman encoding makes this work in Safari. Using DEFAULT and other does not.

Is there a conversion table to convert Mac Roman into Unicode ?

You can just open the text in TextEdit as plain text and do Save As and choose Unicode UTF-8 for the encoding.

For a browser to display text with the right encoding, you need to have the charset set correctly in the html code or have the correct encoding set as default in the Preferences.

That's what it does use in general, e.g. for filenames, etc. But when creating/saving text, each app has its own settings. Appleworks and WordX are too old to use UTF-8, so I think they can only do MacRoman and various others.

I still need a conversion table to take my old MacRoman files into UTF-8 for apps that don't understand MacRoman (e.g. Flash)

Is there a mapping table somewhere to map MacRoman codes into UTF-8 ?

This chart provides the equivalences between MacRoman and Unicode, if that's what you need:

The UTF-8 byte sequences would be another step, if you needed those too.
