Hi I bought my MacBook pro when Snow Lepard OS just came out, which has been long ago and it has been working seemlessly and I love every bit of it. Then I upgraded to Lion OS, for the first few months it has been very good. But recent software updates past 10.7.0 keeps making my MacBook to have frequent screen blackouts and since I have the option "restart my computer when my computer freezes", it constantly restarting when I'm doing my work. What do I do? Should I upgrade to Mountain Lion and hope that will fix the problem? This is the crash report after every event: PLEASE HELP!!!

It's my opinion that there's a hardware failure related to the GPU. I would take it in for a service check to be sure.

However, to be on the safe side I would first reinstall OS X from scratch. Do not install anything but OS X, and see if the panics recur. If they do, then resort to the above.

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch

Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

    Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

    Erase the hard drive:

      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.

      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the

left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.

      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on

the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on

the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.

      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

because it is three times faster than wireless.

I've tried doing the steps above, erasing my hardrive and resinstalled Lion X from the App Store. As soon as Lion is installed and everything is set up with iCloud, the first app I launched was Facetime and as soon as I pressed that call button. BOOM. Blackout and the whole shinanigens started again, samething happened when I browse Youtube, watch videos in QuickTime, ****, even just editing some graphic settings in System Preferences. It's not a specific thing I do that triggers it, it's just does it everytime it feels like it and I am getting very frustrated since it has been my baby and worked so flawlessly for me

I'm having the same thing happening on my MacBook Pro 2011 with OSX 10.8.3 - sudden blackouts for no apparent reason, in different applications, YouTube and VMWare (instant sudden blackout with this)...

Doesn't it sound like some graphics card problem?

How did you resolve the issue?

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU

If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.

Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:

    Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):          com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff             dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000          com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff             dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000          com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000->0x8378dfff             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…

So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. They should be more than willing to install a new logic board at no cost. I have no idea why this faulty GPU is making the headline here on the MacBook Pro forum so often now - could it be because Mountain Lion is just bringing the issue to a head more readily? I don't know - I only know that we're seeing more and more of these kernel panics of late.

    Good luck,
