All of a sudden my harddrive is not being recognised as being connected.. I have had problems with the usb ports not recognising other thumb drives.. Anyone had the same problem and is there an easy solution?

Forgive my absolute naivity .. I think USB?? How would I know (you can tell you're dealing with a Mac novice here!)
The cable end that you plug into the Mac from the external would be the same size as a USB thumb drive if it is USB.
Firewire is more of a square plug then the USB's flatter rectangular plug.
