Can I download the software to my macbook and then transfer to the appleTV?
I am stuck with satellite internet with a 450GB daily download cap...can I download the software via my mac and transfer it back to the appleTV?

No, but you can stream certain contenet with airplay and home sharing, especially if it is in iTunes. If you support Mirroring you can play anything on your CPU screen.
