Why does Apple Mail bring up two windows each time I reply or forward?

For the last week, each time I reply to or forward a message, two windows automatically appear. After I reply or forward the message, then I have to close the second window.

Any idea why and how this started happening? Any idea how to make it stop?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Just an update. I tried deleting thecom.apple.mail.plist file, but that did not help. Still looking for a fix on this.
