I'm trying to set up my iphone to use icloud...when I go into settings, icloud is grey and cannot be selected. What do I need to do?

Try going to https://appleid.apple.com/, click on Manage your Apple ID, sign in, click on "Name, ID, and Email Addresses" on the left side, to the right click Edit next to your Primary Email Address and change it to the correct address, then click Save Changes on the bottom. You will probably have to respond to a verification email sent by Apple to this new address for this change to be effective.

Once verified, you should be able to continue to use the original Apple ID without issue. If you want to change the name of the ID to match your new primary email address you can do that too by going back to Manage you Apple ID and clicking on Edit next to the Apple ID name.

If you contact iTunes Store Support via Express Lane from apple.com, you can email iTunes about the issue your currently experiencing. If you need to completely delete the account, or your looking to inquire about the possibility of associating your past purchases with another Apple ID you have, then contacting iTunes through Express Lane is really the best option. Generally, neither of these things is something iTunes will do, for the average user. In these types of situations, that is why there is Express Lane. It is not a guarentee they will be able to help; they have both the authority and the knowledge but there needs to be a reason behind it, not just that you want to make a switch...if you email them and explain your situation as well as possible, they more then likely will give you a one time exception to assist with this issue.

For future reference, you can change your primary email address associated with your Apple ID at appleid.apple.com (do not include the 'www'). From this site you will see 'manage your apple id'; when you click here, and sign in, you can edit your apple id, including, but not limited to, changing the primary email address. So you keep all of your stuff, you don't have to change anything on any of your device's that have this ID on them, and you keep the same Apple ID due to all of this; the only thing that changes, is what your new primary email address is (which also changes the name of your Apple ID, of course)

Hope this helps; as far as iCloud, figure out the issue with the Apple ID first, once you have the Apple ID straightened out, you can erase all content and settings from Settings> General> Reset> Erase All Content And Settings; this will, of course, erase everything and have you re-set up the device, but it will take care of the account name being unchangeable for iCloud should the issue continue. You can then correct this during the set up assistant.

You don't need to erase the phone and set it up abain to change your iCloud account. Deleting the account in Settings>iCloud will allow you to either sign back into the same account with a new password, or create a new account with a new ID.

As a matter of fact, if the account name is otherwise unchangeable, AND deleting the account, and trying to re-set up directly in settings produces THE SAME PROBLEM, then this is the only way to change the account name, if ALL other possibilities have been tried. Otherwise yes, you should be able to delete the account then re-add the ID. I was simply giving a worse-case-scenario solution, if ever needed.
