MacBook Air Missing sounds

Periodically, sounds for emptying trash and sending email go away. Probably all alert sounds go away but those are the two most noticeable. When I restart the computer they come back. I suspect that it might be related to Airplay usage but can't confirm it. Yes, Airplay is off when the sounds are missing as is mirroring.

What is the problem.
