is iCal compatible with the windows..?

i am planning to get an iPhone 5 and will i be able to download all my friends' birthdays to my phone calendar from facebook..?? i am really confused about this calender and iCal things. if i save it mannualy in the calendar app, will i get a push notification or something when my friends' birthdays come...??? can some of you explain how it works..??
