How do I retrieve my lost data that was backed up on iTunes?

My phone recently had a problem where it needed to be restored every few hours. So I backed up my data on itunes and just before my phone restored, it completely broke and only the itunes logo appeared on my phone. So I sent it to be fixed and when I brought it back home to try to restore from back up, it wouldn't work as it wasn't even an option when I right clicked my device on itunes.

Is there any way to retrieve that data for free. I've lost over 1500 photos,all my contacts and much more.

iPhone 3G, iOS 4.2

In itunes go to edit - preference - devices - and if you have a backup it will show in there.

Yes thank you. It shows the backup. But how do I retrieve everything I backed up?

That's the main problem. There is no option to "restore from backup " for me because my phone broke during the process of restoring. I'm concerned about the fact that itunes has history of my back up but no way of recovering anything I backed up.
