Messages show MINUS 4 chats!

I dont use messages on my computer, but I do have it set up with my account.

Generally I use messages on my iPod Touch to message other family members on their iphone/ipods.

I dont suppose this can really be fixed, its probably just a software bug.

HI

Finder > Go Menu > Go to Folder

Type ~/Library/Preferences in Dialogue box.

Find the com.apple.imessages.bag.plist and Drag it to the Trash.

Restart Messages.

Please, if posting Logs, do not post any Log info after the line "Binary Images for iChat"

Hi Ralph,

I tried your suggestion & it corrected the message count, but today its showing MINUS 1.

I dont normally have messages open on my mac, but I can see the count in the dock icon.

As soon as I click on messages (showing minus 1) it seems to very quickly show 2, then 1, then goes away - I guess as it logs in & corrects itself.

I wonder if there is a way to just hide the count - my only issue really is that its distracting & misleading - I mostly use messages on the iPod, the computer version i rarely use.

Hi,

Try deleting that .plist when the Messages app is closed down (Quit)

I am almost certain I did that before, however I have made sure this time.

Messages was showing 4 - it was NOT open. (all these 4 messages have been read already on my iPod 5 hours earlier today, but Messages does not realise this - maybe a seperate issue)

• I trashed the bag.plist

• I opened Messages (4,3,2,3 flashes up quickly, then gone)

• I quit Messages

• It will stay quit until I report back with the problem re-occuring (or not)

Thanks for your advice Ralph.

I know you've been helping here for years & its always appreciated.

HI,

The Unread Messages in Messages on the Mac compared to an iOS device is a bit of a known issue.

Apple use the word "sync" but it seems it is only "Display iMessage on all devices and computers" and not a full on syncing of actions taken elsewhere.

It seems that the Mac version is particularly bad at keeping up with what has been "read" elsewhere to the extent it is a separate issue.

I will wait to hear more.
