How do you exit the maps app after using it? It seems to be constantly running in the background after I have used it.
Double tap the Home button, tap & hold the Maps app until it starts to wiggle, tap the red minus sign.

Using the turn-by-turn feature of maps: how do you get the screen to time out, instead of constantly being on?
The only time the Maps app under iOS 6 runs in the background is when using turn by turn navigation.
Fantastic. That did the trick. Thank you. Next question: is there a way for the screen to time out, while using Maps, until the next turn, etc. Right now the scrren is always on.
