    What iMac do you have?

What version of OS X is it running?

What is your operating system version? I assume you are using 10.5.8 or earlier since you are using a G5. The usual method is:

    Resolution

    1. Start up from your Mac OS X Install DVD.
    2. From the Utilities menu, choose Reset Password....
    3. Reset the password for the affected account(s).

The Reset Password option may be under a different menu for older versions of OS X like Tiger or Panther.
