java runtime 6 (crazy) install problem - OS X 10.7.5

Hello everyone,

I have been reading the various threads on this issue, but found no answer to my problem:

I am under Lion version 10.7.5 - MacBookPro

I need Java 6 for a program I use for my work.

When I want to install from Java Preferences, i get the following message:

"To open “Java Preferences,” you need to install a Java SE 6 runtime, but you are not connected to the Internet." But I AM connected to the internet.

Accroding to waht I read, I went to the Apple download files and downloaded JavaForOSX.dmg file...

But when I want to install it, I get the message:

"Alert: A newer version of this package is already installed."

When I run terminal java -version

The answer is "No Java runtime present, requesting install."

And thus I am back to where I started...

If you could help that would be incredibly helpful!

Thanks

Helene

Hi,

And thanks for taking the time to help.

I did what you recommended, deleted the Java folder... I checked and there is no Java folder there anymore. Then I tried again and got exactly the same as previously, either from Java pref or the alert when I tried to install the package downloaded from Mac... 😟

Would you have any other idea?

thank you for your response. i can understand that unless, as here, the "other" issue is not merely related, but one and the same, in which case, it seems to me, starting a new thread just makes more work for answer-seekers and answerers alike.

but we digress. i'll be interested to see if the solution i found works for the OP.

The OP claimed that Java wasn't installed. The request to ascertain if those items were on the machine was to verify that condition. Reinstalling the JRE components has nothing to do with those components, since they're installed by the OS and not any Java update, whether from Apple or Oracle. As before, just mucks things up.
