I can't keep iPhoto closed. it's opening itself every few minutes. I close it, and a few minutes later, boom, it launches. I do NOT have a phone or camera plugged into the computer.
This just started. I'm running iPhoto 11 (ver 9.4.2) and OSX 10.8.2 on a year old macbook pro. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Do you have any FAT formatted devices attached? USB sticks, hard drives, ???
If so then remove them or in the iPhoto preferences set the action when a camera is connected to do nothing

No drives or devices attached. iPhoto preference is already set to do nothing when the camera is attached.
This app is like the undead. I just can't freaking kill it and keep it in the ground.
When it opens is there any clue why? Like an import window? or anythign else?

Nope, nothing. It's quit, then a few minutes later, there it is again opening up. Absolutely no clues why it's happening.
Under "devices" in the source pane is anything shown?

No devices are shown, no.
That said, there is no "source pane" being displayed.
It's like itunes. When I plug my phone in, then I get a devices list. With nothing plugged in, no Devices section is shown. I get the same behavior in iPhoto. No devices are shown right now as nothing is plugged in.
Try this basic troubleshooting fix: make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home(
)/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.

3 - check to see if iPhoto continues to open by itself or not.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

Thanks for the tips, but no joy. Deleted the prefs file and then the cache folder, iphoto still spontaneously opens.

Is it possible that someone has used Automator to play a prank on you? Might there be some type of cron job that is automatically starting iPhoto every 5 minutes?
Nope. It's on a laptop that is with me at all times. And it's either at home, where neither my wife nor son would have a clue how to do that, or at work where we own a small business with 2 other employees plus my wife, and none of them would know how to do that.
happened after the last software update to OS X.
Try reappying the iPhoto 9.4.2 updater and then the OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.2 (Combo) updater.
