Thanks for the detailed instructions, Yuvanesan! I did not know I could find updates there.

When deleting the Beta 5 update, it did not disappear from the list. But running software update again still re-downloaded and installed fine 😁

I've seen this before, & some users just wait it out & it eventually completes, sometimes taking 3 hours. Your choice as to whether to continue to wait. If you don't want to, you'll have to force the phone into recovery mode:

Disconnect your phone & turn it off, leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, iTunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don't see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new.

So let me get this right. This has been an ongoing issue for more than 4 years now with various apple products. The only answer (call it an answer) I've come across with regularity is this about having to basically reformat your phone from fresh and do a total update/re-sync.

How is this an acceptable answer? and everyone keeps mentioning this is an apple user to user support site, but it's APPLES ******* HELP SITE!!

So where's the help? Why hasn't this years old bug been worked out? Why am I currently sitting at my PC in 2014, watching iTunes tell me it's "preparing to update" my phone for the last ******* hour and a half??? Why, given so much time and so many customers asking the exact same thing, are we STILL asking?!?

I don't like Apple much, I think they have immoral business practices and they bank off an almost hipster image that the corporation doesn't actually have, but I was given my iphone, and I'll never pay for apple products, so I'll keep waiting and fiddling and resetting and re-syncing and mucking around with settings, but if I was a paying customer, I'd have switched to Galaxy long ago. **** anything else, at least they all have actual customer care.

Thanks for nothing Apple, enjoy continuing to make money on your golden paved path to ****.
