The Cost of the Apple Display

I'm considering going from a 27" iMac to a similar size display and a Mac Mini. I want to make the change for ease of servicing if needed and to just change hardware formats. I do not do heavy-duty graphics or similar work.

Can someone explain to me why the Apple Display costs $999 while I can purchase other similar-size displays for about 1/2 the price? Is it twice as good as, say, LG or Samsung displays?
