It means the wireless adapter is in Monitor mode. It's a mode in which the wireless adapter is capturing packets. Its a mode used for debugging. Did you use Wi-Fi Diagnostics or an application like WireShark ? They can be used to put the adapter in this mode. Google on Wireless monitor mode and wireless sniffer mode to learn more.
So that's why you named yourself wifiguru, hunh? My knowledge of networking could fit on the head of a pin, with a billion dancing angels. I plug things in, set them up according to instructions, and things just work. Never had a network problem, wifi problem, etc.
Glad I know what the all-seeing eye is now - thanks.

Other apps that can capture packets and cause this change to the wifi menu are KisMAC (which crashes on Mountain Lion at the moment) and the built-in Wi-Fi Diagnostics tool.
yeah i was using wireshark in monitor mode or something like that for the first time. thanks

Where might I find this?
If you hold down the option key while opening the wifi menu, it's the last item on the list. I believe it has been there since Snow Leopard or Lion, but I forget exactly.
Ahh, found it.
This helped me
