I have backed up my iphone 3gs to i cloud as i want to restore to my iphone 5 the main item i want to keep is my text messages but it has not backed these up i have gone into settings on my iphone 3gs and into manage storage but there is no option to select to backup messages
Messages are automatically included in an iPhone backup.

I feel your pain.
I have experienced the exact thing. restore from itunes OR iCloud has successfully restored all my settings, EXCEPT EVERY-SINGLE-MSG. lol. Nothing. Even repeated it., no luck 😟.
It seems to be a hit or miss.
I've read people from 3GS-i5, 4s-i5, not having the issue....meanwhile, you and I are lucky enough to have experienced it. Oh and also it's not across the board. Some people only lost certain SMS which weren't in their contacts...how odd?
i have backed up my old iphone as i want to transfer my text messages to my new iphone but it is not backing up my texts and there is no message option to select to back up in settings
