Q: How do I know what version iPod I have?

CAn someone please help me?  I am certainly not stupid but I am so frustrated that I can't get a simple answer to why I can't connect I cloud to my iPad touch which is not as old as my dell pc which has connected, I want to throw the thing out the window!

i Follow the instructions on my iPad to go to settings, general and there just isn't a tab for software, so I don't even know what I am using on the iPod which is not 2 years old??????

and as for being intuitive I can't even see how to post this.

YYours helplessly

You need iOS 5+ on your iPad (or iPod, but as this is the iPad forum I'll assume that it's an iPad) in order to use iCloud - your current iOS version is shown in Settings > General > About > Version . You can see which model of iPad that you have by typing in its serial number (Settings > General > About > Serial Number) in on this page.

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then (if you want to update) then you will need to do so via your computer's iTunes.

Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.

Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

    Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972

A first gen iPad should update to iOS 5.1.1 (it doesn't support iOS 6), and an iPad 2 (and iPad 3) to iOS 6.0.1 (iOS 6 will remove the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change).

Compare your iPad's specifications with those here, and if needed, connect it to iTunes on a computer to update its software.

For information on your Apple product (model, date of production, etc) then enter your serial number at this site. Information, based on the serial number, will be shown.  http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html

    Dear King Penguin and Neil

Thanks so much for your help, I have managed to confuse everyone with my ranting.  Ok, I have established with your help, that it is the iPod fourth generation.  And it is the iPod and not my iPad, which has the iCloud facility on it and is communicating with the Dell PC via the iCloud.

So I need to download the ios5+ software.  When I go to iTunes on the iPod and type in iOS 5+ I just get strange things like iTunes collections, iTunes Icourses, and stuff that looks nothing like a software download.

Awaiting your instructions, many thanks again.

You need to connect the iPod to your computer and select it on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes under 'Devices', not open the iTunes app on the iPod itself. The third paragraph onwards ('Connect ...') on my first post for how to update the iOS version applies to iPod Touches as well as iPads.

You will need the latest version of iTunes on your computer, and your iPod should update to iOS 6.0.1 (which is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple for it) - so, as with iPad, the built-in YouTube app will be removed and the Maps will change.

If it's running iOS 4.3.3 or earlier, it needs to be updated from iTunes on a computer and not from the device itself. Click on the last link King_Penguin posted.

Ok I have connected the troublesome iPod to the dell pc as I don't appear to be able to connect it to this iPad, that I am typing this message to you on due to cable and connection types.

There is nothing on the left hand side about devices just the usual library, store and genius etc.

I guess I can reload you tube if it is removed after the download?

You can't connect an iPod to an iPad by cable (except for potentially copying photos/videos from the iPod's Photos app to the iPad). Do any of the devices that you have appear on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes (have you ever synced them to your computer ?), and have you got the latest version of iTunes on your PC (Help > Check For Updates in it should see if there are any available updates) ? There is also some troubleshooting for a device not appearing on a computer's iTunes on this page : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538

For YouTube no, not the built-in app that you currently have doesn't exist in iOS 6 and it's not in the store. Google have an iPhone/iPod optimised app in the store, plus their are apps such as Jasmine, and there is the mobile version of the site via Safari : http://m.youtube.com

    Dear KP

My iPad and my PC sync, the iPod does not that is what I am trying to do, I am currently doing as you said and downloading the latest version of iTunes, I think.

I take it that I will only loose you tube from the iPod, which matters not as I is so small.  I trust I will keep it on the pc and iPad?  Download finished. Now running. And gathering space requirements.......

It will only remove the YouTube app from your iPod (assuming that you manage to update it to iOS 6). If you update your iPad to iOS 6 (a first gen iPad can't be updated to iOS 6) then it would also be removed from that.

I am now experiencing a slow and problematic download, plus getting fed up and tired. Will bid you goodnight for the time being.
