MagSafe L-shaped connector both directions?

According to the following Apple Support article, the L-shaped connector should only be connected in one direction, and not along the I/O ports.

When using the L-style adapter, never run the cable along the ports with the connector plugged in backwards as this will make it very difficult to disconnect.

Is the only reason for this that it is difficult to remove the connector? Because I don't find it this difficult. Can this damage my Mac?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), HiRes Glossy Display, 8GB RAM

  1. Apparently
  2. neither do I, and
  3. no.

Dumb piece of advice IMO.

Orient the connector in the manner more conducive to your needs. Repeated bending as illustrated in Figure 5 is equally likely to cause premature failure without regard to its orientation.
