I have a 2007 duo core intel 2.6gz 4mb ram 20 inch iMac that had a HDD going bad. I placed a new WD HHd in it with a bootable flash drive plugged in. Also I tried plugging in my time machine that backs up my iMac and my wife's MBP. It only gives me the option to pull from my wife's MBP. How can I get to the DU?

Boot from the Mac's original System Install DVD. Disk Utility is found in the Mac OS Utilities screen, Utilities menu.
Would love to but my SuperDrive went bad 5 years ago and I've been using a LaCie external optical drive.
Does your wife's MBP have a FireWire port? Connect the two and then boot your iMac in Target Disk Mode - hold the T key as you start it. The iMac's HD will appear on her MBP as a locally mounted volume.

No... I assume you can't boot from your external optical drive?
What are you using for your Time Machine backup device? If it's a directly connected drive (not Time Capsule) you could conceivably install OS X on it and make it bootable. You can boot from a USB flash drive too.
You're going to have to find a way to boot OS X from some device, and those are all the options I can think of.
Thank you for your input. I had been told that the external firewire ODD would not pull up. It does! I put in an old Leopard install disk which gave me the ability to format the new HDD and get to the restore screen on my TimeMachine. It is installing now. Once again thank you.

Some do and some do not. Many things become difficult with ones that do not, so it's good yours does.
