creating black and white charts with patterns in Pages?

Hi. Does anyone know how to create black and white patterned charts in Pages (or other iWork application)? When making Charts in Pages (i have the most recent version), you can make all sorts of colored charts (bar charts, histograms, pie charts, etc.), but in preparing doumnets for publication i need all my charts in black & white. I can make histograms and bar charts using different shades of grey no problem, but i'd like to create histograms using black and white "patterns" like dots, horizontal lines, stripes, etc. Does anyone have any idea how to do this, or know where existing patterns can be downloaded for import into Pages?

Many thanks.

Todd,

You will need to create or find the patterns elsewhere and then store them in iPhoto. Then, Select the series in your Chart and use the "Graphics Inspector, Image Fill, Choose" to select the stored pattern and add it to your chart. Use the menu just above "Choose" to Scale the pattern.

Hi Jerrold,

Many thanks for that. Yes, i do know how to do that, as i've been using grey-scale colours to represent different bars in a histogram. What i'm looking for would be info to help me to either locate the patterns i seek (dots, horizontal bars, stripes, cross hatches, etc.) so a web-site or a place where i can download such patterns would be helpful, or if not, how would one go about creating such patterns? I don't have or use Photoshop, but perhaps someone can help me out with either finding such patterns on line, or how to create them using a common or inexpensive application that i can use. In searching these forums, there were a few posts in 2009 that led one to a website where one could download these patterns, but it was a mobile me site and the link no longer works. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 🙂

Hi Peter,

Thanks for that. I spent way too much time today searching for usable downloadable images and found none that would really work well. In the end, i downloaded a trial copy of EasyDraw, created a simple square box and then infilled it with the included patterns that come with the trial application. Then i exported the image as a jpg file. Then imported the image into Pages using Fill-->Image fill, selected the file, then Tiled Image. I did this for a number of usable patterns like horizontal, diagonal and vericle lines, dots, and wavy patterns. Not great, but it works OK, and is passable as long as i don't blow up the charts that much.

Would still love to hear from anyone that has solved this problem of having good quality patterns to use in iWork applications, especially for people like me needing professional quality charts and graphs in black and white for publication. The included colours and textures are great, but don't work in publications. It would seem an easy "add" for Apple to include B&W patterns in the next version of iWork (whenever that''ll be!). It's the only thing really lacking for me.

Anyway, many thanks for your help Jerrold and Peter!

cheers,

todd

Don't export it as a .jpeg which is unsuitable for B&W images, blurring them as rgb files (not B&W).

Better is .tiff (compressed B&W tiff are tiny) or 1 bit .gif.

It is also possible that .pdf vector files might work but I haven't experimented with those.

This is very retro lo-tech with unattractive results, which is why I guess Apple hasn't bothered with them.
