random kernel panics

Question

hello all. I had been experiencing regular kernel panics on my mid-2009 MacBook Pro. From what I could tell, it was related to Chrome, but I&#x27;m no expert. I ended up reinstalling a fresh version of mountain lion (deleted partitions, erased the HD, installed from scratch) and proceded to run all system updates to bring mountain lion up to date. I just had another kernel panic, causing me to reboot. Chrome isn&#x27;t installed. The most likely cause is a dead hard drive. If it isn&#x27;t that, it would be the logic board.

thanks for the reponses, folks. out of curiosity, what lines in the report lead you to those possible issues? i&#x27;m trying to not only figure out this issue, but learn how to pick apart the reports so that hopefully I can be of help to others in the future as well as fixing my issue. Thanks!

Take the machine to an Apple Store for testing. Print out the first page of the latest panic report and bring it with you.

No lines in particular, just the absence of any third party kernel extensions to blame. You have a 2009 machine and hard drives from 2009 MacBook Pros tend to start failing about now. That may or may not be causing the kernel panics. It only costs $75 to replace the hard drive. If if keeps panicing, then you can decide if you want to pay more for a new logic board.

What about this situation - sometimes when I shut my mbp and then reopen it, it doesn&#x27;t awake. Then I have to shut it down by holding the power button and then clicking it again to restart.
