Upgrading my OS so I can run icloud from my imac

I have a 10K549 build imac and have OS v 10.6.8 installed. I read that in order to use icloud from my computer I need to download a different version, having already downloaded to correct version which I have read contains the functionality I am looking for.

Before I go down a rabbit hole and download loads of software and get into a scramble with what I need to do, can someone please tell me what steps I need to take in order to utilise the 10.8.2 v I have just downloaded as I am advised by the software that I need 10.8 to run the combo I have downloaded. In other words, how do I get from 10.6.8 to 10.8.2 and why doesn't it download as part of software updates anyhow?

I don't even know if my software is snow leopard or lion?

Any help would be gratefully received.

OS X 10.8 is not a free upgrade. You need to purchase 10.8 from the Mac App Store before you could then apply the update you downloaded (which will not be necessary since you'll get 10.8.2 when you download from the App Store). Confirm that your system will run Mountain Lion and learn the precise process here:
